Services b0rked

Ok. Help, PLEASE. Something has screwed up my services. (The stuff listed in
services.msc.)

I was getting some "tech support" from VALVe software for Half Life 2, and a
few of the things they told me to do were to disable script blocking in
Norton AntiVirus 2003, delete temp files, things like that.

Suddenly, my NAV is complaining about being unable to verify it's own self.
It directs me to this page:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...ge=english&module=1005&error=4&build=Symantec

That page talks about the Symantec password service of some kind. It
basically tells me to check some things, and if any of them are true, to
uninstall and reinstall NAV. Which I try.

At which point the uninstaller tells me that Windows Installer (another
service) is somehow corrupted or not responding. If I go into services.msc
and hit the Start button on the service, it starts up and I can
uninstall/reinstall, until I Stop it or reboot the computer. But I shouldn't
have to do that. Using Microsoft's tech support database for
repairing/reinstalling it don't work either.

On top of that, if I download an MP3 and try to run it, Windows tells me
that the RPC Server is Unavailable. Trying to run an MP3 directly from my
drive doesn't get a response of any kind (WinAMP doesn't even open).

All of this is pointing me towards something wrong with all of my services,
all at the same time. About a week ago, when this first started, I was also
starting to get strange crashes occasionally when I'd open up Explorer.

So I reinstalled WinXP. Everything was installing/uninstalling fine until I
upgraded to SP2 again (which I didn't have to download at all, meaning a
cached version was stored on my computer somehow), at which point all the
problems started up again (minus the crashing).

Help? Anyone?

Interestingly enough, I did some searching (after getting another error
commenting on how iKernel.exe wasn't working and the RPC thingy whatsit
wasn't working when trying to install something else), and something pointed
me in the direction of dcomcnfg.

If I open dcomcnfg and open the Computers folder under Component Services,
rather than it displaying My Computer, like it's supposed to, the dcomcnfg
window just disappears entirely, like it crashes silently or something.
