Realtek AC97 problem after XP service pack 2 installed.

Realtek AC97 is built in to the motherboard which is a Gigabyte GA7N400
Pro2. I have already tried the following things.

1. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers from the original cd. System worked
until service back 2 was installed.

2. Uninstalled and reinstalled the original drivers, and did thes several
times each with the newest drivers found at the Realtek and Gigabyte sites.

3. Wiped the hard drive completely, reloaded windows xp and the drivers,
installed all the upgrades (including driver upgrades) except service pack 2,
tested the configuration, installed servicepack 2 and it wiped out my sound.

4. Spent 2 hours 27 minutes on the phone with "John" at MS XP support and
he followed the same path of uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them
(except he chose to use the unlicensed drivers exclusively) and then telling
me to take the machine which I had built to someone else.

I need assistance in finding an approach to this problem. The machine works
fine without service pack 2. I keep it behind a firewall and use antivirus,
antispyware, and popup blockers. Is sp2 required?

Do you have the original BIOS or have you updated it? I see here that the update
F13 addressed an issue with AC97 Codec error detect.

Thanks for responding. You at least gave me something I hadn't tried before.
It didn't solve my problem, but I did take the time to install the newest
bios. I have now upgraded the bios followed by removing the realtek drivers
and reinstalling them. The problem is still not resolved with regards to my
sound and XP service pack 2. I have also rechecked the voltages and signals
coming from the chips on my motherboard, hard drives, dvd/rw and player,
floppy drive, network ics, and all the ports and nothing indicates a hardware
failure is present.

I am getting tired of having my work computers having programs and devices
fail because Microsoft updates came in and tweaked the system. I see that
unless Photoshop gets written for a Linux machine, my next computer may have
to be a Mac, even though I think they are over priced for what you get.
