Services and Startup

Running XP Home. In MSCONFIG there are tabs for SERVICES and STARTUP. Is
there any comprehensive info on what these various items do (in plain
language) and which are safe to delete from either.

For example, I found BCMSMMSG in STARTUP and found it controls my modem,
which I never use as I have broadband. I unchecked it with no ill effects.
Your help is appreciated.
