Services and IE with problems

After the last Security Updates and a reboot my W2K server is behaving
strangely.

On this server is running Exchange Server 2000, and all related services are
working fine (email is working, outlook clients can access their mail,
outlook web access is working).

However, I am having lots of problems with the server:
- IE does not work - even opening "About" makes IE freeze
- cannot stop/start services manually
- in IIS Admin, can stop "sites", but cannot start "sites"
- cannot install new updates (because Windows installer does not start)
- opening the "Add/Remove Programs" takes ages

There are no errors in the Event Log, things just freeze.

One last note: in Safe-Mode, IE works fine.

Please help, I am quite desperate.
Any suggestions are welcome.

One other thing I noticed was that the service status of "Microsoft Exchange
Information Store" stays at starting, but the event log has an event stating
that "The Microsoft Exchange Database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store
(nnnnn)" has been started."
