Service Packs

I do not have service pack 1 or 2 on my computer. I checked to see what
updates were installed and, a long time ago, it indicates service pack 1
"failed" then it indicates "canceled" on two different occasions. From what
I've read on this board, it seems these packs cause more problems than they
solve. Is it really that important to have them. I have spyware and Norton
Internet/virus protection.

Hi gr8aunt

it is is Very important that you have these ServicePacks installed. They
resolve issues with the operating system that come to light that 3rd party
products such as Norton etc will not and can not resolve. The more up to
date you are the less problems you will have, it is not a good idea to leave
them. Make sure drivers, service packs and critical updates are all applied
and you will save yourself a lot of hassle in the future. Also, any time you
make a support call it is the first thing you will be asked to do...

Yes it's important to have them. They solve many more problems than they
cause. Remember that people who do not have problems almost never report
that fact.

You don't need to install both. Installing SP2 will include everything from
SP1.

Hi Chris: I have my computer set to receive automatic updates from
Microsoft. Why do you suppose I never received them? Also, does service
pack 2 replace 1 or is it necessary to install both? I am technology
challenged and wouldn't have a clue what to do if the installation crashes my
system. Would System Restore protect me against that? Thanks for your help.
P. S. Why do you think the Windows updates indicate "failed" and "canceled"

Get SP2 and all subsequent critical updates.

I just re-checked the installation history on my Windows Automatic updates
and find that Windows Service Pack 2 shows canceled on Tuesday, October 19,
2004, but the very next line indicates Windows Service Pack 2 successful on
Tuesday, October 19, 2004 - Source - Automatic Updates. The same thing
applies to the cumulative update for SP2. It shows canceled on 10/19/04 then
the next line shows successful on 10/19/04. I guess that means I'm okay.
When I check for new updates I'm told my computer is current - no new updates
available.

Right click on "My Computer". Go to properties. It will say what service
pack level you are at!

Everybody who had trouble with SP1 or SP2 posted their woes here. About
twelve people in all.

76,452,333 people who installed SP1 and SP2 sucessfully did not have much to
say.
