Service Pack

S

Steve Adkins

I recently downloaded all the XP patches (bug fixes
etc !) including service pack1.
I elected to archive my existing set up.

The new system works perfectly well but the archive has
taken a lot of space.

Unfortunately, Microsoft will not talk to me because
my XP is OEM.

I would appreciate any help for getting rid of the
archived files.

If you no longer wish to uninstall SP1 you can remove those extra files, to do so:
Set your folder options to show hidden files then go to: C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$
and delete it. After uninstalling the folder go to Add or Remove, choose uninstall and it will fail
and then the listing will be removed.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the other
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

Utilize the following Windows XP utility programs afterward, in this order:

Steve, DON'T DO IT....I am NOT an MVP, and I have had reason to want to do
what you are asking about.. Disastrous results involving a re-install and
Yes, I did follow an MSVP suggestion that this was possible., and followed
instructions verbatim.. The Hotfix 'backups' should not be messed with; the
'archiving' that SP1 does is 'shakey' to attempt to remove.; trust me, you
don't wanna do this.

No.
It is quick, easy and painless.
If you had problems with this simple operation it is more likely that
there was a preexisting issue on your computer.

If you mean 'Hotfixes' that were 'buggy' and required patches to fix the
mess, I agree they were preexisting.

Even though it may not seem so, what you just said is really unrelated
to your previous post.
