Service pack 2 on an older PC

I dragged one of my old PCs out of the closet to give to a relative who
really only needs it for email. It's a Gateway P3 500mhz with 384mb of ram.
The only thing that isn't stock is a NVIDIA GeForce MX 420 I put into it a
few years after I bought it.
So I stick in an old 10GB drive I had laying around and and installed XP.
The entire install process went fine and the first thing I start doing is
applying updates. I continue going to the windows update page, selecting
the required/recommended updates, downloading & installing those updates and
rebooting until it SP2 finally comes up as an option.

I select SP2 and download it. It starts to install but just hangs there.
For hours if I let it (and I have). I've tried this twice and each time it
hangs at the point where it says it's "Inspecting your current
configuration" with details saying "Performing inventory". I've opened the
taks manager and it doesn't appear to be locked/not responding. But it also
doesn't appear to be doing anything.

So I think that maybe there is something currently on the machine (although,
the only things I've installed thus far are XP and the updates, nothing
else) and decide to just go through the upate process (again and again) and
select those updates that aren't SP2. About 45 minutes later, the ONLY
update left for me to apply is SP2. I figure it's now time to try again and
begin the process. Problem is, the install is hung in the exact same place
it got hung up before.

Is there any other way I can try to apply SP2? I know the service pack is,
by and large (although, there are other elements as well), just an
amalgamation of other updates. Is there any way I can apply these updates
individually? If so, where can I get them because they aren't showing up on
the windows update page? Additionally, where can I get things like the new
Security Center?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

thnx,
Christoph

PII? How is the performance Wes?

I'm running P4 1.7 (768 MB) and still _not_ satisfied with it's speed. My
new P4 3GHz is awesome. I've dumped my Pentium-S (128MB EDO :-) system few
months back, as it doesn't even handle Windows 2000

You "old" machine is better than what I'm using. ;-) Gateway PII 450MHZ w/
384MB ram.

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Or ask your friends if any of them have the CD.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Compared to what, Ramesh? ;-) It's faster than my old Pentium 83. LOL
Not having ever used anything newer/better/faster it isn't as bad as you
might think. All a matter of perspective. Sometimes using AutoCAD when the
screen redraws it can be quite disappointing.

I have started buying pieces to put a new machine together with.

Ah! yes. Compared to 83.

I now know why there are so _many_ posts from you regarding AutoCAD Vs
negative icons issue.

Hiya Ramesh,

Every time I add or remove software I get the white space. Every single
time, so I know how to fix it. ;-)

My cousin used to work in AutoCAD few years back, and he said that ACAD is
somewhat complicated and only the Engg students understand the terms. I come
across terms like "donut", "peanut" etc ;-)

Hi Ramesh,

"donut", "peanut". Those are probably items that most AutoCAD drafters are
eating while working. LOL

The DONUT command is for drawing donuts. Donuts are filled rings or
solid-filled circles that actually are closed polylines with width. An
inflated innertube would be a donut.

I have no idea what peanut would be.

The terms I most often come across are "dangit, it did just what I told it
to do." ;-)
