I have an XP Home machine that won't accept sp2, ie7, or any other update I
get from Microsoft. I try to go thru the update site and ie6 won't let me run
ActiveX due to a permissions issue. I've reset all permissions and settings
on ie6 and have even put *.microsoft.com in my safezones. I've downloaded sp2
standalone and once it starts unpackng I get a "system cannot find file
specified" error. I download it again and get the same thing.
I've run three anti-spyware programs (including hijack this which shows
NOTHING out of the ordinary), 2 AV, and removed every program I can think of.
I'm at a loss here.
Thanks

CHKDSK shows the drive to be fine and you have how much free space on the
system partition?
Have you ran the hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostic utilities on the
hard disk drive to ensujre there is no hardware issues?

Dell reports no error on the drive and chkdsk gives the same.

While the Dell test is not horrible - they are not the hard disk drive
manufacturer. ;-)

The other question remains unanswered - about the free space.

Also - you may want to download the IT version on another system and bring
it to this system. Perhaps even expand the update first before copying to
your system.
