Service cannot start possibly due to Windows Defender

I have been using a software called direct update for several months on my
vista PC. Suddenly it's service (DirectUpdate) fails to start. After a short
investigation, I found that defender doesn't let it start but I can't
instruct defender to allow it. I tried to stop defender and firewall
services but the service is still blocked. I find info in my logs about
other software as well but there is no way to allow them.

I think you may have to work at excluding it from the scan, as an interim
measure. Tools, Options, scroll down to Advanced options, and fill the box,
by adding the full path and file name to the Tools/Options/ do not scan box,
hit the add button, and Save.

No good. It could be possible that it's not Defender that causes the
problem.

Andreas,

If you installed Direct Update so that it can be used by all users then
you must click the button "Show for all users" in Windows Defender. Once you
do this you will have access to the "Enable" button at the bottom right side
of Windows Defender.

Have a nice day.
