Serv Pak 4 Recovery

H

Howard Waller

After installing Service Pack 4, my computer loads up to
the point where the desktop icons start appearing at which
time the system restarts. Any of the safe modes which
load Windows does the same thing. Going to the safe mode
using the command prompt functions until explorer.exe is
commanded at which time the system crashes and restarts.
Is there anyway to run the control panel's uninstall
program to unload the Service pack using the command
prompt? All files are still accessible either through the
network connection or by the command prompt safe mode.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Howard,

I am assuming you are the sole administrator of your standalone Windows 2000 computer
and that you installed the Service Pack by visiting the Microsoft Windows 2000
Service Pack Web site (Express Install, or Network Install). That is... SP4 was not
installed by your Systems Administrator and/or by using Microsoft Systems Management
Server, Windows Installer technology, or other automated methods.

If you selected to "Archive Files" try removing Service Pack 4 by following the steps
in this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB825062 Service Pack 4 Permits You to Remove the Service Pack by
Using the Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=825062

And if you selected "Do Not Archive Files" you would need to do an in-place upgrade
to remove SP4. You may want to try and fix the "problems [you] have encountered with
SP-4" before doing an in-place upgrade. For more information about performing an
in-place upgrade see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:
