Hi everybody,
It is the first time I come on this forum, I hope it will be fruitful
I have a really anoying problem with my laptop (XP FAMILIAL system) :
I had launched 2 anti-spywares programs (safe ones) in the same time,
then the laptop has automatically switched off after a while.
Now when I want to switch it on, it reboots again and again. I have
tried the 'safe mode' but it did not worked.
I could now re-install XP PRO with a US CD (my previous XP version was
from France), do you think this operation may work without damaging
datas?
Or may you have another solution?
I am really in a hurry as I am currently Phd student in the USA and
this laptop is a pivotal tool for me !!
Thanks !!
K.
Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key just as soon as the
first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until
the Windows XP Startup Menu appears.
Look on the menu for an item that reads "Disable automatic restart on
system failure". If that item is present select it and press the
Enter key. The menu will then reappear. This time select Safe Mode
from the menu.
If the computer starts up okay in Safe Mode then use System Restore
and restore the system to the most recent restore point that is prior
to the spyware program incident.
If the system does not start up okay in Safe Mode then it should give
you a "Blue Screen of Death" STOP error message and the contents of
that message will be a direct clue as to the cause of your problems.
If the Startup Menu does not include the item to disable the automatic
restart then we back to the beginning. I understand that you do not
have the original CD for the French version of XP that is currently
installed. Is that correct?
You will not be able to install an English version of XP over top of
your installed French XP. It will have to be a clean install or you
will need a French CD.
This is a bit of a longshot, but one fairly common cause of problems
such as your are experiencing is an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME (STOP
0x000000ED). One way of fixing this is to boot your computer with a
Windows XP installation CD (any version will do for this I believe)
and choose the Repair (Recovery Console) option. When the computer
has finished booting to the Recovery Console and stops at the C:\>
command prompt enter the following command:
CHKDSK C: /R
Without the actual error information from your computer this is a bit
of a long shot but if none of the other suggestions above works then
this one may be worth trying.
Good luck
