SERIOUS!!! Locked out of computer at startup

Adam Borkowski

I am posting this on a different computer then the one
that won't start up. The computer i use is a Compaq with
a Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz and 2 Gigs of RDRAM with Windows XP.
So Last Weekend I was listening to some music on
Windows Media Player Series 9 and it shut itself down. I
had no Anti-Virus program at the time so I could not
prevent it. I tried to turn on the computer and It showed
the Compaq symbol and went to a screen to choose from Safe
Mode, " " with Networking, " " with Command Prompt, Last
Known Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally.
If i choose one of the safe mode options it will run
through a list of what it uses to run safe mode and it
stops at AGP440.sys. So it may be a Video Graphics Card
Problem. If i run it from the other two options it will
go to the screen where it has the Windows XP logo with the
green bar under neath it moving and then it would turn
blue really fast but i can tell that it has writing on it
but i don't know what it says.
So I went out and bought Norton System Works Pro and
made Emergency Disks and ran Anti-Virus and it didn't find
any viruses so i ran Utilities but it comes up with a
error and i cant do anything. Please help Microsoft and
other peers.

Maybe a hardware problem. But how did it shutdown? Did windows force it in a
dialouge box or did it just turn off? Did you get a blue screen?

Disable everything in the bios except the video card like sound and lan then
try again.

You might try a repair install as follows:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

OK, the boot log you see will probably not help you unless you have booted
successfully while creating a boot log and have that printed out to compare
against. This is because, the drivers are listed AFTER they have
successfully loaded - where it hangs, the next driver it is trying to load
is the culprit!
