Serious image distortion

I have a Windows XP home computer that is having problems with the monitor
in window$ only. There are lines on the screen at every line of text. My
setup:

Video Adapter:
NVidia Vanta

Monitor:
Microtek C788

Help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure the refresh rate is within specification for the monitor and
the resolution you have your display set at.
 
Check the cooling fan on the video card is still going round (no vents
blocked by dust etc).. If the video card overheats it can produce this
effect.
