Sent email remains on screen- what's happening?

Using Outlook 2003 Win XP on an IBM R61 laptop.
If I send an email with an attachment, the window for that email will often
sit apparently frozen on screen. I may need to close it manually, or at
times shut down Outlook, to make the frozen window go away.
However the email still gets sent while this is happening.
Only happens if the outgoing message has an attached pdf or picture file.

Whaddaya reckon?

Possibly a lack of memory in your computer? How many other applications do
you have running?

No other apps running apart from antivirus, 2GB RAM, and this only happens
with Outlook when the message has an attachment, not with any other
programs.
