sends e-mail multiple times

Outlook 6.0 used to work fine. Now will send my e-mails multiple times to a
person. That person will get the multiple e-mails and sometimes cannot open.

My McAfee Virus scan will pop up when e-mail is in process of sending saying
it has detected numerous e-mail "sends" in the last 30 seconds that might
possibly be worm activity. Asks if I want to continue what I was doing or
stop the e-mails. If I say continue what I was doing, that message will
continuously pop up and require me to click on it to continue what I was
doing until (I think) all of the multiple e-mails are sent.

This problem seems to happen when I send an attachment with an e-mail. I
don't think it's happening when it's simply an e-mail message with no
attachment.

I have repeatedly scanned and no viruses who up. Any ideas of what is wrong
and what I can do?

Sounds like you may have a worm...try using more than one virus scanner to
double check...if you are using Mcafee try using AVG also. It's a great
freebie which is particulary good for e-mail. You can find it here:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Just be sure to set both virus scanners to do a complete scan of drive
C...just in case a worm is hiding in a folder that is not normally checked.

If a worm or virus isn't found then Outlook may be hanging up while a
send/receive is in process and then immediately re-sends...I've had that
happen before and it only appears once in my sent messages yet a friend
receives it multiple times...especially if it's an attachment. I think it
was an Office Update that finally eliminated it. Also, if you are sending a
big attachment make sure you don't have an automatic send/receive scheduled
for every minute or so...if so, re-set it for every 10-15 mins. so that the
attachement has time to send and your connection isn't re-set too soon.

Hope this helps.

The suggestion for AGV was a help. It found and cleaned 2 Trojan Horses.
However, my multiiple sent e-mail still persists. (It IS just with e-mails
w/attachments. E-mails w/o attachments work fine.)

Regarding your second suggestions to check my automatic send/receive
schedule, I can't find where to do that. Where would that be?

Concerning updates, I'm supposed all up-to-date with those. Microsoft tells
me there is nothing new for me when I check for updates from their site.

Thank you for your help!

For send/receive go to the toolbar and click "tools", then "options", then
"mail setup". You'll find the send and receive button there and then you can
adjust the automatic send/receive time. Make it for at least every 15
minutes. Hopefully that will help. Otherwise, I'm all out of suggestions :-(

I don't think I have the same version of Outlook that you do. Mine is older,
from Office 2000. I did find a setting for checking for new mail and I
switched that from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. I'll have to see how that works.
Meanwhile, I'm going to see about reinstalling the program fresh. I have to
get the disk from work to do it. Thanks for your suggestions. I especially
appreciate the one about AVG virus scan. That found the Trojans that McAfee
missed!

That's very indicative of a server timeout somewhere. Try lengthening the
server timeout value on the Advanced tab of your account properties pages.
It's been too long for me to recall exactly how to display that in OL 2000.
