Sending maill on public network

I am trying to send emails from my webmail account using a public hotel
access point. I can receive emails fine but get the following error on
sending.

#An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: Brief for WFP video.doc',
Account: 'Gripped', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '421 aamtaout01-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from
[217.194.71.138]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error
Number: 0x800CCC67

I had no problem in a different hotel yesterday.

The error you got is normal. For an explanation see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

A few smaller ISPs still don't block port 25, but those are fewer and
fewer as time goes on. The available workarounds are as follows:

1. Use webmail via your browser for sending when away from home.
2. Ask your mail provider if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. Use the SMTP server belonging to your current connection (not practical
if you move around a lot).
4. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is
not blocked like port 25 is.

You will often have problems connecting to port 25 in a hotel using an
internet provider other than the one that has that email server. Ask
ntl.com
if they allow you to use any other port instead, if if so, where to find
their
instructions for switching to the other port. Just trying all the ports is
a
very slow way to find out; there are about 65,000 ports available, and it's
unlikely that more than a few of them will accept outgoing mail.

While you're waiting, you might want to check if you can log in using
webmail, which does not use port 25:
