sending Mail

I used to be able to press Send and Recieve (in between the normal timed send
and recieve) and it would do just that. It now only sends and recieve when
Windows Mail is first opened up, so I have to close and open Windows Mail to
receive Mail. It also playes the New Mail Sound when sending/Recieving is
pressed (although no mail arrives) The error box comes up, but with no error
messages. I am using Vista Business.

Can I download and should I re-install Windows Mail

You can't reinstall Windows Mail without reinstalling Vista.

Which antivirus are you using?
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help.

I am using Trend Mirco PC -cillen which I have done for several years. I
also paid for a 2 year subscription, so changing is not really an option. I
used PC-cillen in the past with no problems, and this is a replacement laptop
to the Vista laptop that was coffee damaged. Windows mail worked fine on the
old one, so I don't think it could be the Anti Virus.

I have already re-installed windows on this machine to try and solve this
problem, so I am unwilling to go through this again, but I did get an error
message on both occasions when starting up Windows Mail for the first time. A
sending error code which were all zero's.

I hope this helps and thanks for your help.

Regards,

Neil

Thanks for your help, but I don't think this is the problem.

The send/recieve button is there on the toolbar. It only send on opening
Windows Mail. When this button is pressed it plays the sound as if Mail has
arrived. The Progress box comes up as if acessing Mail, but the errors come
up with no errors in it.

Trend PC-cillin is compatible with Windows Mail, except you
will have to turn off its email scanning option.

Are you running any other type of third party security software
such as anti-spyware? It sure sounds like something is interfering
with the normal operation of Windows Mail.

There are a couple of other things you can try. Download the
WMUtil program from http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil
and use its 'Repair Database' and 'Compact Database' functions.

If all else fails, you could try Windows Live Mail:

Hi gary,

Thanks again.

Downloaded WMUtil and tried it, but it never worked. The only Third party SW
I am using is PC-cillen, which I shut down and then tried, but still the same.

I'm not sure what "it never worked" means. Were the buttons in WMUtil
grayed out so they could not be clicked, or did it go through the motions,
but it brought no improvement?

Looks like we have tried all the easy fixes. The next step would be to
try the Windows Live Mail program.
