Sending Files Via Messenger

I've been trying to help my Son solve his dilemma of not being able to send
files, attachments, pictures, etc. over Windows Messenger service. What am I
missing here?
I've looked all through Options in Messenger, Remote Assistance is enabled
in Windows....
Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

Arghhh... I found it ! Internet Connection Firewall had to be disabled while
sending. Now, finally some peace...

Rick,

I would suggest putting the firewall back up and simply opening tcp port
6891 in order to allow files to be sent to others.

O.K.
I told my Son to disable the ICF , when he wants to send something and then
enable it right after, but can I count on him doing that ? Hmmm...I like
your idea better. How do I go about doing that ?
Thanks

Same place where he disables/enables it, instead of unchecking or checking
the box for the firewall, when it's checked there's a Settings button to be
clicked. Then he just needs to make a new entry by clicking Add, type
Messenger in for the description, the computer's name, and 6891 into the
field for the external port.

The computer's name can be found by right clicking My Computer and choosing
Properties and it's under the Computer Name tab under Full Computer Name.
The name is everything before the first period (if there are more) so for
instance it might say "Dell." and the computer's name would be Dell

Then he should have no problems sending files over Messenger

Thanks a Ton Matt...
I won't know if it works until tomorrow, when I (or my Son) try and send
something . None of my contacts are online right now. Although, after
setting that up, I got an error message saying that the proposed routing
could not be established (or something like that)
Thanks again for your help...

Rick

Just some additional information behind the logic of opening a port on your
firewall when you send somthing to someone over Messenger:

When you 'send' a file over Messenger, you are inviting them to connect to
your computer and download the file that you specified, so you need that
port open so they can connect to your machine and Messenger can send them
the file.

Let us know how the test run works out.

Everything works great with the file transfers and all. My Son is amazed
that it works now. He thinks you're a Whiz! I told him that I fixed it at
first and he said "Uhha"
Thanks
