Hi

I used to be able to right click on a file and have the option to "send to
desktop" as a shortcut. It appears to have been stolen...lol.

Please could somebody help me find the culprit and put it back !!!

Thanks

I've run across this too. I think it has something to do with your being too
deep into a directory. I'd try and find a link closer to the root for where
it is you're trying to link to. If all else fails, try moving the
file/folder upwards in the directory. You should find the menu option then
reappears.

Wouldn't it be simpler and easier to just click on the
item, then right click/hold, and DRAG the item onto the
desktop?

You still get your shortcut onto the desktop, and in this
way, you know where it'd going to end up. It lands where you
dragged it to.

The only reason I can think of why you wouldn't do it this
way would be if you somewhere deep in the bowels of your
computer and you don't have a view of even a square inch of
your desktop.

I find it easier to take a moment or two to clear some
space-- move a window, shrink a window-- then drag your item
and create the shortcut.

I DO hope you are also aware that-- once you have created
the shortcut and put it on your desktop, you can put it
anywhere else you like.

When I am doing a fresh install, I will typically make
shortcuts to my drives and important/frequently used
programs and then I'll put them in a variety of places, so I
always have access to my important stuff.

Good luck!

Go to Start -> Run and enter Sendto (all one word, no spaces)
in the Open box.
This should open C:\Documents and Settings\YOURACCOUNT\Sendto.
If it doesn't, open Windows Explorer and navigate to that
location.
Is there a "Desktop (create shortcut)" icon present in this
folder?
If it's missing, check these two location.
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\SendTo
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\SendTo
If you find it in either location, see if you can copy and
paste it into your Sendto folder.

If you don't find it, do the following:
Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
In the Advanced settings box, uncheck "Hide extension for known
file types".
Click OK.
Next, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Documents and
Settings\YOURACCOUNT\Sendto.
Right click an open area in the right hand pane and select
New -> Text Document from the menu.
Change the name of the file to this:
Desktop (create shortcut).desklink
Hit the enter key.
Right click a folder or file and see if you now can send
shortcuts to the Desktop.

If that doesn't solve your problem, here are a couple of
automated solutions that you can try:

Turn off 'Hide Extensions for known file types' in folder view options

Start -> Run -> SendTo

Right-click in SendTo folder

New -> Text Document

Name it: Desktop (create shortcut).DeskLink

You can give it any name, it's the DeskLink extension that gives it its functionality.

Thanks for all the help folks. This sorted it although I'm sure the other
replies probably would have worked as well..

Cheers
