Send Receive problem in Outlook 2k

I have a client who has Outlook 2K on a Windows XP pro box. Outlook is
confirgured in Corporate e-mail mode although we only use internet mail.
Everything has worked fine for a year or so until last Monday. When she came
in last week she was unable to send/receive. When you press the Send/Receive
button nothing happens. Also, when you try to exit Outlook it will not exit
correctly (i.e. you have to end the task). I have run setup and tried to do
a repair and that did not help. I also re-installed Office and updated it
with SP1a and SP3 and that did not help. I cleared her Outlook profile and
rebuilt it and that did not help either. I also tried logging in as a
different user, creating her outlook profile on the new user and still had
the same results. The only thing that I have tried that made any difference
is running in safe mode. When I run in safe mode and press Send/Receive you
get the box that says checking for new messages and then Outllook stops
responding.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

In Corporate mode but using only Internet e-mail, does that mean the
e-mail client is connecting to POP3 and SMTP servers, or is it still
maybe going through Exchange to a POP3 server?

Other than the standard response of "done a FULL scan using recently
updated anti-virus software", have you checked the size of this user's
PST file? Maybe it's too big. Check if it is nearing the 1.82 GB
threshold. Might be the PST file got corrupted. Some folks put their
PST file on a mapped network drive but this can result in a corrupted
file if the connection is broken to the network drive without a proper
close of the file at the client end. Trying running the Inbox Repair
tool (scanpst.exe) against the .pst file (while Outlook is closed) to
see if there were any problems. But run scanpst.exe against a *copy* of
the .pst file, then use the copy if the file got fixed and works okay in
Outlook.

Microsoft also has a truncate tool, I think called PST2GB.exe, or
something like that which will shorten an overly big PST file but it
probably does so through truncation rather than splitting it into 2
files. Also, if you ever get Outlook to successfully open the PST file,
then compact it. Deleted items do NOT get physically removed from the
PST file; they remain with a status of "deleted" which simply means
Outlook won't provide access to it anymore. You have to compact the PST
file to physically purge the delete-marked records from it. Same
happens after you run an auto-archive.

If the file was getting really big, sure sounds like the time to
establish some archiving policies and set the auto-archive on each
folder and enable the global auto-archive schedule option in Outlook.
