Send and Receive Button does nothing

Just like the subject line says. This is a new installation, my first, and
when I hit the send and recieve button after composing a message, nothing
happens.

As a matter of fact, I wonder if I'm going to be able to send this one.

Replied by email and to newsgroup

Obviously, this message was sent.
Had you clicked Send in the composed message?

Well, yes, I had. I apologize for not being more specific. The message and
another one to alt.sex.stories.d were both in the Outbox, ready to go. In
somewhat more detail I'll tell you that I had "Send messages immediately"
turned off, since I often think of something I should have said after I've
clicked "send" on the message.

The "Send and Receive" button, on the menu bar near the top of "Windows
Mail" was "grayed" out. Most of the other buttons up there will show some
type of change around the icon if the cursor moves over them, but "Send and
Receive" didn't.

The messages were sent after closed "Windows Mail," reopened it, and then
closed it again. This time I'm trying it with "Send messages immediately"
enabled.

My Outbox in Windows Mail is full of random messages. Many that
are just blank- no subject, no body. Some are posts to newsgroups,
that would make it seem that they never got sent. But they did.
It concerned me at first, thinking some of my posts were not being sent.
I then realized that they were being sent and just figured it's a bug.

That isn't the case for me. I created two messages, sent them and they went
to the outbox, where they stayed, until I exited the program, opened it
again, and then exited again. With "Send messages immediately" enabled they
go out fine, as expected, but the "Send and Receive" button is still "grayed
out" - I can't check my mail except when the normal periodic check is made.

were these "Mail" messages or "Newsgroup messages My send and receive was
also grayed out because I had not enterd my e-mail server account info. Once
I had entered a pop3 e-mail account the button was imediatley available.

This button has no function when winmail is used for news groups only.

This is a known problem. The cause is not yet known. Just delete the
"ghost" messages.
