Send and Receive both fail to operate

OUTLOOK 2003 has suddenly refused to send or receive emails - or even allow
me to write them. Error message : messaging interface has returned unknown
error!. "Try restarting Outlook"- still didn't work. "Try re-installing "-
still doesn't work. I've recently upgraded a Firewall - could that be
responsible?

Try creating a new mail profile from scratch via Control Panel | Mail | Show
Profiles.

Thank you for your interest. My first attempt to follow your suggestion
failed because Outlook could not connect to POP or SMTP. I'll have another go
and let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Yes - I've created another profile and that is a great help. Thanks again. I
now have the problem (I think) of transferring my contacts, calendar etc to
the new profile. Is there an easy way of doing this? Any further help you
can give me would be greatly appreciated.

All of your data is located in a file with a .PST extension, so you just have
to add that .PST file to your new profile. See
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm for more help with
restoring your .PST file.

Fantastic! Thank you so much. Can't tell you how grateful I am.
Just one more thing: why did Outlook fail in the first place - was it
something I did?

It's really hard to say. That "messaging interface returned an unknown
error" message can be caused by so many things, or combinations of things.
If it happened when you installed your firewall, perhaps something was
corrupted then, but you might or might not be able to duplicate the problem.
At least your issue had a relatively easy fix :)
