Question about the heatsink that comes with Sempron 64's.

What sort of mounting arrangement does it have? Clips with a latch to
tighten it, by any chance?

Would a 70 to 80mm adapter likely mount up ok?

Yes the adapter will fit nicely and an 80x25mm 2500rpm fan will be a lot
quieter. The one bad thing abpout the AMD cooler is that it only uses one
clip on each instaead instead ot 3 like any decent cooler should have.
Maybe they've changed by now.

Thanks, Wes. So it doesn't have a lever to tighten it up, it's kind of like
the evil socket A's?

Oh, it's got the lever to tighten it. It just clips onto one tab at each
end instead of the 3 that are there. Mine broke the tab and almost fell
off. Luckily I was there when it happened, noticed the temps start to
rise, and found it before in completely dropped off and did who knows what
kind of damage.

For real. Just maybe your motherboard has a shutdown at too hot now feature
you can set, hiding someplace in the bios? Or maybe motherboard monitor
would work on it and you could set it to run the free Show Stopper at a
certain temperature and if the cpu fan stops.

I wasn't worried about the cpu. All K8's have internal protection and it
works. Found that out when one of those lousy TMD fans failed. The damage
I was worried about was the big hunk of metal free falling in the case and
shorting something out, breaking something, etc.

Wes, did you try to install a Micro$oft OS on the system you are
describing and that CPU simply convulsed, threw a tantrum, and kicked
off it "blanket" (CPU cooler?).
