NET 2 install vs existing 1.1

I have NET 1.1 installed. Windows update is offering NET 2.0.

On a clone of C: I tried the update to 2.0. It leaves 1.1 in place -- it's
there in uninstall programs.

If I uninstall 1.1 then install 2.0, win update still offers me 1.1.

Are they both supposed to be there and coexist? I would have thought that
2.0 replaces 1.1.

Not sure what to do with my master C: partition.

The two versions of the framework ie 1.1 and 2 happily co-exist.
Applications written for version 1.1 of the dotnet framework seem to work
better with
with the original version of the framework which is why it should be
retained. That at least seems to be the consensus among regular dotnet
coders.
