Not very responsible for me to post the MSFT url, or MSFT for posting the
download to the general public in the first place?

the download is not publicised - so only those who are LOOKING for it will
find it. You have published the link to a very high-volume group where there
are LOADS of people who can't cope with Ctl-alt-Del, never mind a service
pack that's not complete.

Note that newsgroups are not PC magazines, interested in headlines only.
Posting such links w/o making clear that a "Release Candidate" is still
*unfinished* software is grossly careless.

So why do you THINK that you need this service pack?
What is broken now that you THINK this service pack will fix?
And why aren't you installing SP-2 and subsequent updates (which
account for 226MB of SP-3)?

Before MS added the download page, you could get it before with a
registry tweak and then visit the Windows Update site to have it
offered there. Since that tweak can be Googled, I suppose MS decided
to provide a download page for it.

I've trialed SP-3 in a VM. Nothing fantastic (for me). I'll probably
wait a few months after it goes public before bothering with it (to
also capture the subsequent fixes to SP-3).

All I did was post a direct link instead of Three Chicago Wolf indirect
link, yet nothing was said about the original post that started this thread.

The average person or even casual Internet user does not frequent
Usenet. For you or anyone else to generalize the user demographic
viewing the postings in this group to be the equivalent of dumb
computer users who don't know any better, can't read, or grandma
taking her broke computer to Geek Squad because she inadvertently
downloaded and installed RC1 from Microsoft and installed it is beyond
disingenuous. This is a public group and the freedom to post public
information regarding Windows XP, even if the whole of computerland
doesn't yet know about it as soon as the tech folks who follow the
story do, is neither careless nor unimportant. Believe it or not,
people smart enough to seek it out are smart enough to know what
they're getting into. Joe and Jane User will continue to NOT seek it
out, know about it, or get their systems into a bind.

Unfortunately the "newbies" CAN arrive here through the web access by
clicking help, THEN they discover the the link to really get them into
trouble!
