Security update support expiration for Windows XP

I'm confused. I've seen a statement that Microsoft will
stop supplying security updates for the Home edition of
Windows XP in 2006. Yet it seems that a new version of
Windows won't be available until that year. Does that
mean a computer bought late in 2005 will have an
unsupported operating system after only one year?

Windows XP (all verions) end their main support lifecycle on 31-Dec-2006.
However, as I understand it critical security fixes will continue beyond
this point as per the guidlines under the Security heading at
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];lifecycle).
