Security patches

Following newspaper stories re newly developed security
updates for Microsoft XP I downloaded and installed some
40 Security and Critical Update patches that Microsoft
site deemed urgent for my computer. Upon re-booting I
found that many gaphic settings were changed and no
manipulation of the Display settings on the Control Panel
could restore them. Eventually I discovered the System
Restore function and have reverted to an earlier setting
which has corrected the problem.
My question is: will those patches I have downloaded be
still operative in the system or will they need to be re-
installed and should that intial installing have changed
the settings?
Thank you

Rowen;
You used System Restore to a time before the patches were installed.
The patches are effectively gone.

The best option probably would have been to install the latest Windows
XP video driver.

Also, in the future, install no more than 4 at a time, rebooting
between each group.

You can install Service Pack 1 first, #1 on this link:

Then install Windows XP Rollup , #20 on the same link.
Then there will be few updates needed since the Service Pack and
Rollup contain the majority.
