Security patches = slow machine

D

David

When I first installed XP my machine was very fast,
however since installing all the security patches my
machine has become very slow with Windows taking forever
to boot up. Is this performance degredation caused by the
patches?

I'm considering rolling back to a clean install of XP and
relying on my firewall to keep nasties out as I am sick
of the poor performance of my system.

Hello David,

The first thing I would try is to boot into Safe Mode and see if the
problem occurs there. The liklihood is that it will not. In general,
security patches do not cause major performance issues, although that does
not mean they could not.

So, at that point you will want to use a built in tool called MSCONFIG.

A) Go to Start\Run and type
MSCONFIG <OK>
B) In MSConfig, choose "Selective Startup"
C) Remove all check boxes and click "OK" and "Yes" to reboot.
Then test our issue.
D) If you don't see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services" and "Startup Items", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot then test our issue.
E) If you don't see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot and then test our issue.
F) If the problem returns, it is due to a Startup Item. If not, it is a
Service.
For Services:
G) Click the Services tab and check the box for "Hide all Microsoft
Services."
H) Enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
For Startup Items:
I) Click the Startup tab and enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK"
and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
J) Repeat until you track down the offending component.
