Internet Security software make the internet connectivity sluggish

I have tried Mcafee Internet Security 2006 and Norton Internet Security
2006
in my machine before, and both have a common problem that makes
the internet connectivity very sluggish. It causes the CPU usage
becomes
100% sometimes. It also make the outlook express very slow too, and
some other software applications.

I have no idea what's going on. The interent is so slow, and when I
check the allowed programs in the firewall, the router is in the list,
so it shouldn't block
the internet traffic.

After I uninstall the software, there is no problem at all, but
of course I need security software to protect the machine.

anyone has similar problems before? any suggestions??

Please download, install and update the following software...

Ad-aware SE v1.06

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {

(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line Scanners to
remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses

are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

When you install any application make sure you disable any antivirus program
first and shut down as many running applications as possible such as those
shown by the icons in the lower right hand corner. Do not install more then
one internet protection package at a time [ due to possibility of conflicts]
and if you are using XP use only one firewall - either the built in Windows
firewall or the software firewall you install but not both. Open Task
Manager to see if any processes are hogging memory and cpu cycles [ignore
system idle process] to see if anything looks unusual. Instead of disabling
the software firewall try disabling it to see if that improves performance
or not. If performance improves for the internet your firewall is somehow
misconfigured. FYI do not disable software firewall if you are connected
to the internet and have no other firewall protection such as a "router"
device connected to your cable/dsl modem. You may also have a
malware/spyware related problem so be sure to scan for both after you have
updated the definitions for those applications and you may also need to scan
in Safe Mode. --- Steve

The only thinks I'd add is that the 2006 versions are new one and the new
versions of such security suits often has bugs in them,and slowing down the
CPU and the internet are usual symptom .
Since it is still 2005,use the 2005 versions.
Also check the minimal system requirements for them.
You need at about 512 Mb of RAM (for XP) so such suits would work fine and
without problems.The processor should be at least 1000 Mhz.
