Security Center

I can not find the Security Center in my list of services under
administrative tools or by using Run services, msc. When I click on the
Security center icon, I get a message that the security center is not
available. I have been infected with the pwsteal virus and have followed
removal procedures but the virus keeps coming back. Since I can't turn on the
security center, I can't turn on the firewall.

Help!

Hi there Dorothy,

You might want to log into your machine in Safe Mode by pressing F8 before
you get to the Windows XP Splash screen. Run the Anti-virus while in safe
mode, and also run any anti-spyware applications that you are running as
well. That should take care of the virus.

Once that is done, see if you can get to security center again. If not, you
may have to do a system restore.

Hope this Helps!

Best Regards,

Will,

I ran Norton in safe mode and found no sign of the virus but still can get
to the security center. The message still says it is unavailable and it
doesn't appear in the list. Any other ideas,

Thanks,
Dorothy

You mention Norton, but didn't say what version. Recent versions of
Norton Antivirus have an "Internet Worm Protection" module that take
over the function of the Windows Firewall. Recent versions of Norton
Internet Security have their own firewall *and* Norton Security Center
which take over the functions of the Windows Firewall and the Windows
Security Center. If your Norton fits into either of these categories,
that would explain why you cannot access the Windows Security Center
and/or Firewall.

Hi there Dorothy,

You can try to perform a reinstallation of Service Pack 2 by downloading it
from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

However, please be aware that I don't know how this will affect Norton
AntiVirus. You may wish to back up any data that you wish to keep before
doing this as it may cause system instability.

P.S.- Windows Live OneCare is a really nice application sweet available for
only 49.95 ;-)

Best Regards,

~Will
