security and Vista

Like most people I am concerned about security, OK we have windows defender a
firewall, but just realised that OneCare does not support 64 bit Vista. Am I
to assume that Microsoft have just forgotten about it, or are they intending
to rectify this. At present I'm using A-squared, avast,
spywareblaster, spywareterminator for my security, thinking of upgrading to
paid one, definately not an Internet security ( resourse hog) just
Anti-Virus/spyware and a Firewall, any suggestions on which one, for 64 bit
Vista?

I really don't think you need all that unless you know you're not going
to practice Safe Hex. Since Vista is so new, none of us in the tech
support business know just how vulnerable to malware it is going to be
now that it is in the wild. On my Vista (32-bit), I've only got Avast
and am using the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender and that will be
sufficient for me. It may not be sufficient for you and YMMV.

As for 64-bit, finding software that works with Vista 64-bit (and XP
64-bit before it) has been problematic. If you want to use OneCare -
which I do not recommend since its antivirus has a very low catch rate -
you should check at the link below to see if there is a 64-bit timetable.

Jesper Johansson has made a list of 64-bit antivirus programs:

Thanks for that Malke, I do intend to panic, I know Vista is in it's infancy,
but remembered XP and the problems with that. I did find a Trojan ( if true)
when I ran a scan with A-squared, it said I had a win32.spirit on my
computer, whether that was one or not I got rid of it, and it seems fine. I
simply love Vista, and everything seems to be fiting nicely together, my
hardware is now rectified somewhat, my software, they have given me updates
for Vista, so I don't have any worries almost. Thanks again. agricola

I'd be really skeptical about claims from antimalware/antivirus programs
*unless* 1) they are really certified to work with Vista; 2) you know
you were a naughty person and were surfing on The Wild Side. ;-)

I think we'll see a lot of false-positives from non-Vista-compliant
security programs for a while. I'm not saying you should be complacent
but OTOH I'm not so sure I'd trust all third-party security software to
recognize what it is seeing on this new OS.
