Security and the Reading Pane

The reading pane certainly makes previewing messages easier. However, at one
time I had been told and read that these types of preview options are a
security hole for certain virus emails. How true is that? If it is true, is
there a way to minimize the threat other than just turning off the reading
pane?

It has not been true for many years if you had the Outlook Security Update
installed in Outlook 98 and later. For Outlook 2002/2003, this security was
built in and you were never at any risk of auto-executing viruses without
(l)user intervention.
