Security access in Recovery Console

R

Ross White

After uninstalling aol on my pc and restarting an error appears stating that
the file ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt and i can no longer get windows
to start up . I have managed to get to the recovery console, however i don't
get to choose the partition or a password (i understand you can change this
when windows is functional). When i try and replace the ntoskrnl.exe file, it
says that access is denied. When the prompt begins, it is simply C:, and is
does not recognise C:\windows etc.. Checkdisk does not finish and says there
are problems with the hard drive. The main problem is that i can't get to the
machine's local security policy, i assume that the "Recovery Console: Allow
Floppy Copy and Access to All Drives and Folders" policy is disabled. Does
anyone know how i can access the security somehow to enable access to the
hard drive from recovery console?

Hi Ross

What about using your Windows XP CD and trying a re-install over the top of
your existing installation? Sometimes this is easier then trying to play with
the recovery console but it depends on your level of experience. Make sure
you have a backup of everything first just in case!
