SECTIONPAGES field not updating when document opens

I have a series of documents that use the { PAGE } of {SECTIONPAGES } fields
in the header. The page setup is "Different first page." I'm working with
Word 2003, SP3.

When users open the document, the first page header displays as "1 of 1"
regardless of the number of pages in the document. All other pages are
numbered correctly. If I select View│Header and Footer, or double-click to
enter the first page header, or place my cursor on any of the pages 2 through
X, the SECTIONPAGES field in the first page header updates. The problem, of
course, is that my end users don't want to perform this extra step.

I tried creating a work-around by inserting a bookmark on the last page of
the section and using the PAGEREF field to generate the "Y" number. However,
the same problem occurred.

Has anyone else determined the solution to this problem?

Assuming that all the users have access to the document template add an
autoopen macro to that template to force an update to the fields in the
documents based on and attached to it. The sample code at
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm will update the headers.
