Secondary IDE Channel Not Functioning

Hello,

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP Pro and recently
realized that my CD and DVD drives were not available via My Computer
anymore. They have power, but I cannot access them through the OS. A
check of the device manager shows only the following under IDE ATA/
ATAPI controllers:
- Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
- Primary IDE Channel

There is no Secondary IDE Channel. I tried uninstalling both the
Primary IDE Channel and the Storage Controllers entries in device
manager. When doing this, upon reboot, the system adds all of the
devices back, including the Secondary IDE Channel. However, the
Secondary Channel has a yellow exclamation point on it, and the system
says it has to reboot in order to complete the installation of the
hardware.

When checking the properties of the Secondary Channel at this point,
it indicates that "This device cannot start. Code 10". If I continue
with the hardware installation and let the system reboot, I'm right
back where I started, the Secondary Channel is no longer visible.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for resolving this issue?
Thanks.

Check the BIOS to see whether your Secondary IDE channel is disabled
(or disabled-able). If that's not a part of your issue, then for the
heck of it you could try a Windows System Restore (%SystemRoot%
\system32\restore\rstrui.exe) back to a time when the controller was
functioning. Of course, that only helps if it's a software issue.

Depending on the intel chipset,850 chipsets and earlier use intel application
accelerator v2.3 For the IDE controller(s) drivers.If later chipset,use
windows
drivers.1st,install intel chipset installation utility from intel, get the
utility that
matches the chipset (not always the latest).Get thier chipset i.d. utility
also if
unsure...

Thanks. I did check the BIOS once and couldn't find anything related
to disabling the IDE channel. Also, I don't know how this would have
gotten tripped if it is set.

I would prefer not to do a System Restore if possible.

Thanks.

Well I can't think of much else to try, besides say downloading and
reinstalling the Motherboard's chipset drivers. If that didn't work, I
would say that unfortunately you may be out of luck for the time being.
