Secondary IDE channel missing

My secondary IDE channel is missing and the CD-ROM and CD-
RW drives don't show up on my HP xt878. I've tried HP and
MS support to resolve this but with no luck. At one time
they used to show up on occassion, but now they're just
gone. HELP!!!!
