Second Window Freezes

Internet Explorer works fine until I click on a link to download a file or open a second window. The second window or download screen freezes. I have dial-up so life is slow to begin with but this is painful. I found a workaround on the downloads where I open the properties on the link copy and paste the link to my main window.
I have Norton Antivirus 2004 have run Spybot and Ad-aware 6.0 opened up my security on my browser so that anything can get in but the problem persists. It’s a Dell computer with XP installed. (It did not come with XP discs so I can’t reinstall) Have all the latest updates of XP and IE.
Any ideas?

Try the following:

Can't open new windows, one closes

Courtesy of Don Varnau:

From IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing> uncheck "Reuse windows
for launching shortcuts."

And... you have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc.

You'll have to uninstall the program or turn off the feature that's blocking
new windows.

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

Try these steps:
Open IE, tools, internet options.
Select Advanced tab and click the [restore defaults] button.
Later, select the Programs and click the [reset web settinngs] button.
Click OK.

Hope this helps.

Can't Open New Window

Go to Control Panel>IE Options>Advanced tab> scroll down and un-check the
box which says "re-use windows for shortcuts">apply>OK out. Also, in any
open website, if there is a link and you want to keep the main web page
opened, R-click and select "open in a new window"; if that be your wish.
