but after a while it does not see E drive anymore if I go to control panel
and add new hardware it searched and says it it there and then it will wook.
How do I keep it in the system so it wont drop off. I have had many
computers over the years but this is a new one for me. Running XP Pro

How is that drive attached? Are there any power-saving funcitons enabled
for it in Device Manager?

Finally, it may be that that drive is failing, and you should consider
replacing it. I see 80 gig drives for under CDN$50, so there's a pretty
compelling argument that your data (and time) may be of higher value.

triker3:
It really would be best if you would explain the problem you're experiencing
more clearly...

1. When you say that all is well "at b startup", what exactly do you mean?
Are you saying that the 80 GB HDD that's connected as a secondary drive is
recognized in Device Manager and has that drive letter E: assigned to it in
Disk Management (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer
Management > Disk Management). Is that what you mean?

2. So that you're able to at least initially access data without any problem
on that 80 GB HDD?

3. When you "added" that 80 GB HDD to your machine (I'm assuming it's a PATA
and not a SATA HDD, right?), you're sure you installed it correctly. It's
properly connected and configured (jumpered)? You're sure of that?

4. Is that drive new, or was it from your older machine? You're reasonably
certain it's non-defective? Think it's a good idea to check it out with the
HDD diagnostic utility from its manufacturer?

5. There's no problem with your 80 GB boot HDD, right? It boots without
incident and functions without problems, right?

6. Clearly explain the problem you're having with that secondary 80 GB HDD.
What do you mean when you indicate it "drop(s) off"? It simply disappears
from your system after a few moments? And there's no other problem with the
machine when this happens? You can continue to use the computer except for
the fact that the HDD has "disappeared"?
