I am running XP Home Edition SP2 , and I have 3 profiles. On one profile
search assistant works fine, but on the other 2, it comes up with a blank
blue screen with the animated dog. I've tried reinstalling SRCHASST.INF
without any success, it always asks for the WIN XP Home Edition SP2 CD for
the MSGR3EN.DLL file, even though I have the CD loaded. Could the registry
have been compromised? This has been going on for almost 2 months now, so I
don't think I can do a system restore. Is there any way to correct this
without having to reinstall XP?

If you have a copy of the full sp2 installer, you can extract the file it's
looking for
( msgr3en.dl_ , which is the compressed version)

At a command prompt....
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x

and either browse to the location you extracted it to, when prompted, or try
copying it to the relevant locations

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\msgr3en.dll
C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\msgr3en.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\msgr3en.dll
