Search problem in browser address window

T

Tony R.

When I try to do a search in the address window in the
browser (IE 6.0 SP1 with all of the updates), the browser
goes to a page saying:

"The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking
for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to
adjust your browser settings.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer"

For instance, if I want to search for video cards, the
address window on the tool bar shows the following with
the above message: "http:///? video cards".

I use Alta Vista as my search engine and this had never
happened until several weeks ago. Unable to find an
answer to this issue on MS Tech Support site.

How do I get the browser to once again use the search
engine I select when i type in the search term in the
address bar? Any assistance would begreatly appreciated.

Tony,
Most errors of that type are adware or Winsock related.

I have the same problem... I can'c use the "?" search in the address bar. My search button(icon) works fine but I like to search by using the "?". If I search video by typing "? video" in the address bar, I get this for a result "http:///? video" and "The page cannot be displayed" information. For some reason its tring to go to a webpage and not search. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
JR

I just got mine fixed..
I had two of these in my registry. One value had an extra "_".

This is correct..
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks] "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"="

This is bad..
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks] "_{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"="

I had both lines in my registry and I just deleted the one with the "_{CFBFAE00". Everything is working again!!!
