I posted this before but I was having difficulty getting access to this newsgroup. I will try it again. When I use my Windows search feature my computer locks up and I have to alt ctrl del because it is not responding. I did a defrag and a disk error scan but it still does not work. It does not even attempt to look for files it just sits there. It used to work at one time so I don't know what happend. Does anyone have any ideas? Do I have to contact MS Support? Thanks.

It would sound as if a file is corrupted somewhere.
Probably in a windows folder, which means that you are
going to have to reinstall windows, which is a very long
slow process

To reinstall search:
Go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line:

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%systemroot%\inf\srchasst.inf

(this is one line separated by a space)

You will need the XP CD.

If still no joy, try going to Start > run > cmd
and typing
sfc /scannow (there's a space between the c and the foreward slash)

You'll need to have the XP CD in the CD ROM
This will detect and repar missing and damaged system files.

Good luck, hope this helps

This happend to the Start -> Search or folder/right-click/Search of the
Administrator account of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. The other admin account
search worked fine. When search is clicked, the Task Bar shows the hour glass
indefinitely. When shutdown is selected from the Task Manager it says the
explorer.exe isn't responding.

This fixed my problem, without reinstalling or rebooting. Start -> Control
Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services -> Indexing Service, Startup type from
Manual to Disabled. It was currently stopped.
