hello

i am looking to remove the search feature from my start menu, but i am
having problems doing so.

i know that, adding, NoFind, as a dword decimal value of '1' to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
in the registry editor, will remove search from the start menu, but it also
removes the accessing of 'search results' by simply pressing F3. i still want
to be able to search for files, with the F3 shortcut, but i do not want to
have search on my start menu. is it possible to have one without the other? i
want search removed from the start menu and to still have F3 start a document
search.

thanks
john

Right click Start menu button, choose Properties
Click Customize button and go to Advanced tab
Scroll down and untick Search and click OK > OK

Good Luck, Ayush.

Yes, if you use the XP Start menu and not Classic.

This will only remove Search from the new XP Start menu not the Classic
Start menu.

Right click the Start button.
On the Start Menu tab.
If Classic Start Menu is selected, select Start menu.
Click the Customize button next to Start menu.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down in the Start menu items box and UNCheck: Search.
OK your way back out.

F3 and Search will still work.

NoFind Description

Removes or disables selected search features.

This entry stores the setting of the Remove Search menu from Start Menu
Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1
when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not
configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry, and the
system behaves as though the value is 0.

When the value of this entry is 1, the following features are removed or
disabled; when the value is 0, these features operate normally:

* The Search item is removed from the Start menu and from the context menu
that appears when you right-click the Start menu.

* The system does not respond when users press F3 or the Application key+F
(the Application key has the Windows logo).

* In Windows Explorer, the Search item still appears on the Standard Buttons
toolbar, but the system does not respond when the user presses CTRL+F.

* In Windows Explorer, the Search item does not appear in the context menu
when you right-click an icon representing a drive or a folder.

hey wes,

well, from the beginning, i switched to the classic start menu, so, while
your post was informative, it did not help, as i want less clutter on my
start menu, as much as i want to use the F3 key for document searches. so i
cant decide between the two. the default xp start menu, is too fancy looking
and, basically ugly to me, so i am not switching back to it. but thank you
anyway.

An alternative is to use the free and excellent 3rd party search tool, Agent
Ransack.

I also use the Classic Start menu. I have Search on my start menu, but I do
not use it. I use Advanced Search, which is a shortcut to
C:\WINDOWS\searchadvancedoptions.vbs.

Search Advanced

I use searchadvancedoptions.vbs all the time, I would be lost with out it.
I also use Classic Search. I have a shortcut to searchadvancedoptions.vbs
on my Start Menu called ADVANCED SEARCH. I hardly ever use the regular
Search. I always forget to set the Advanced options. And Search is
worthless without the Advanced options.

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm

Scroll down to (or do a Ctrl + F) to...
Search - Advanced Options (Set as Default)

Read the instructions.

If Windows is on the C drive...

Download searchadvancedoptions.vbs here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchadvancedoptions.vbs

Place searchadvancedoptions.vbs in C:\WINDOWS

Create a shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\searchadvancedoptions.vbs (I have mine on my
Start Menu) %allusersprofile%Start Menu\ADVANCED SEARCH
or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\ADVANCED SEARCH

Download and double click: searchstartmenu.reg
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchstartmenu.reg

Download and double click: searchactive.reg
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchactive.reg

Thanks very much to Kelly (MS-MVP).

Hi Wesley,

I can prove that my program Vista Start Menu mush useful then menu in
XP and much more useful then menu in Windows Vista.
In Windows Visa you see all programs in small window and always need
to scroll it. This is big bug in interface.
Other bugs I describe here -
http://www.vistastartmenu.com/cognition.html

I know that you need defend Microsoft interest, but if you try Vista
Menu you find it very useful and you get great user experience.

I ready to grant you PRO version for free or even for all Microsoft.
In PRO version you may run any program with one click in five seconds.

Wesley, please write me private message to get registration for PRO
version.

Hi,

Try Vista Start Menu -
http://www.vistastartmenu.com
it work under XP and mush useful then system start menu.

Just had a look... looks nice. The only thing I don't like about it is the
name... Fine if you have Vista I guess but I have XP and don't like the
graphic 'VistaStartMenu'.

I have a really nice desktop... modified Zune theme with DesktopSidebar (
http://www.desktopsidebar.com/ ) and just don't feel good about seeing the
word Vista.

It does look nice tho.

Dennis,

Windows Vista sucks. I used it on my new machine for about four hours then
dumped it and installed Windows XP Pro. Windows Internet Explorer 7 also
sucks, by the way.
I know that you need defend Microsoft interest, but if you try Vista
Menu you find it very useful and you get great user experience.

Obviously, I do not have to defend anything Microsoft. ;-)

I do apologize to you for giving you a hard time about your start menu. And
I will cease and desist. I am sure that you have worked very hard on it.
It takes a lot of skills to program something like that. I have none of
those skills and could not program anything like it.

However, suggesting your start menu when someone has a fixable problem with
their XP start menu is not always the answer.

And thank you kindly, Dennis, for your offer for your start menu, but I am
honestly not interested.

All you are doing is spamming the newsgroup. If your motivation was to help
people you would reply to a variety of questions in here with help, not just
one type of question and one reply, - a link to your product. Since all you
do is reply with "use my product", it's clear all you are doing is spamming
the group for your own benefit.
