Search Error

Hi,
I would appreciate your help in telling me what this error means. I have
recently published a web using FrontPage 2000 and the publish was successful.
However, the search returns the following error:

Error from search: Service is not running

Can some one please enlighten me? What does this mean? The service provider
appears in the dark about it, although I suspect its something to do with the
FrontPage extensions.

Regards,
Alastair

You need to contact your web host and ask them to start Index Server and also to create a Index
Catalog for your site.

Thomas,
Thanks for your reply. I contacted the Web host as you suggested and
received this reply:

"I have received a response from my Network Administrator and he informs me
that we do not run an index server. He mentioned that there are many other
ways around it and that you should investigate these."

I have responded and asked them what they suggest as I am not familiar with
other ways. Any suggestions?

They need to then configure the FP extensions to not attempt to use Index Server, if they are
running Windows Servers.

Hi Thomas,

Before I go back to the provider, can you tell me what this does? Will this
allow the search to work if this button is clicked on the site, or will this
disable it completely - in which case, should be removed?

It is not absolutely essential, but it would be nice to retain it.

In the meantime, I had a further reply from the tech support:

"I have passed your email onto my network administrator and he will come
back with a response as soon as possible."

Your valuable advice is appreciate Thomas, thanks.

Only if on a Windows 2000 server
- Windows 2003 does not support the WAIS search so setting to not use the catalog won't help

Hi Stephan and Thomas,

I am still waiting on the provider. Have you any suggestions as to how to
get the search to work if an index server is not in use? I'm afraid I'm
clueless here.

The FP search must be configured via the FP extensions to work by the web host. If your web host
choose not to provide support, there is nothing you can do to make the FP search component work. You
will need locate a 3rd party service.
