When I use search companion to search my hard drive for a word or phrase in
a specific folder that I know is in that folder it does not find it. I go to
all files and folders and I type in the word I am looking for in the "a word
or phrase in the folder" box and under advanced options have chosen search
subfolders. It will find the word in the name of a file but not in the file.
I have all critical and most recommended XP updates installed. Would the
type of file I am searching in have anything to do with it?

XP search is not world-class. Though some things can be done to improve
it, consider this free utility instead...
