Search Companion text search folder doesn't find all files

I have WinXP Professional 5.2.2600 SP2 Build 2600
with IE 7.0.5730.11IC (both according to "System Information").

I open a shortcut folder which contains 13 files,
all of which were FTP'd from a Unix box,
all of which were originally plain-text,
and all originally opened in Notepad once they were on my PC.

On my PC, I edited and saved the files using different software,
depending on the size, readability, and complexity of the original
file,
so they have a mix of "open-with" types
(e.g., Notepad, Wordpad, Word, and 3rd party software;
BTW, some of the icons changed; some didn't;
some changed to something unexpected,
but the files open correctly when double-clicked).

The problem is when I use the "search > all files" mechanism
within that folder, as follows:

I'll enter nothing in the file name box,
and a text term in the word box (e.g., MY_WORD),
which I happen to know is in two particular files.

Of the remaining options,
only the "search system folders" and "search subfolders" boxes are
selected
(this, apparently, is the default;
there are no sys/subfolders in that folder;
FWIW, indexing is on; companion is off (i.e., no puppy)).

I'll start the search, but it doesn't find the word at all
(I copied-and-pasted it from the text itself, so I know it's there;
and, yes, I removed leading/trailing spaces).
I thought it had to do with the underscore,
so I removed it and the subsequent "WORD",
leaving only "MY" (w/o quotes),
which found it in a bunch of the files,
but omitted the one I needed the most,
and which happens to open with the third party software,
but I can't believe that has anything to do with it
(i.e., why did all the files fail with the underscore?).

I'm a computer programmer with over 30 years of experience;
20 years using MS products, so I know my way around.
I've never had this problem with previous versions of IE or Search
Companion,
and was wondering if anyone knows what the issue is.

Thanks!

P.S. Please keep in mind that I can't give the real names of the
files, or describe or list their contents, or give any other specific
information, as they are proprietary.
