Stuart,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState

In the right-pane, right-click "Use Search Asst" value and choose Delete.

Close Regedit.exe

Windows XP Search companion should be enabled. FYI, to use Classic search
set "Use Search Asst" Value data to "no".

Can you post a screenshot of the search window. If it's completely blank,
try these commands from Start, Run:

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD. Or locate and then click
the %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if the following conditions are
true:

1. You installed Windows XP SP2 from a Windows XP SP2 CD that included SP2
as part of the base installation.

2. You downloaded and installed Windows XP SP2 from the Microsoft Web site.

Note If the ServicePackFiles folder is not present on the computer, you can
copy the files from a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 installation CD.
