Search Companion file missing and Microsoft KB fixes are ineffecti

I have Wndows XP with SP2 intalled. I get Error Message: "A File That Is
Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found"

I went through all the steps contained in:
Article ID : 319949, but nothing eliminated the error message:

1. I have SP2 so installing SP1 obviously not the answer
2. hot fix denied because error message saying I have SP2 installed
disables activation of hotfix
3 installed files suggested but still get same Error Message: "A File That
Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found"

I could not find any ohter KB articles on the subject.

I had windows desktop search installed but uninstalled it. search companion
wasn't working when I had this installed either.

Any suggestions as how to fix are appreciated. Right now Start-Search is
not working at all, so this is obviously a hinderance. Hopefully, I don't
have to reinstall or repair Windows, unless this can be done without
disturbintg any settings, etc. Thanks.

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

If that does not help, follow these steps:

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2
separately) which-ever has the updated system files.

-----------------------------------

Locate and then click the %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if the
following conditions are true:

1. You installed Windows XP SP2 from a Windows XP SP2 CD that included SP2
as part of the base installation.

2. You downloaded and installed Windows XP SP2 from the Microsoft Web site.

Note If the ServicePackFiles folder is not present on the computer, you can
copy the files from a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 installation CD.

CAPS are not needed. If there is a missing file (in ServicePackFiles
folder), you could use the Windows XP CD (with SP2 instegration). As you
don't have one, you can create it using the instructions given here:

How to integrate Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the Windows XP
installation folder:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/

I carefully followed the KB article Method 1 throuth step 7. I got an error
message:
Failed to copy some of the files necessary for integrated installation.
Please check that
a) No network or copy errors occurred during the integration process
b) The format of the destination directory is correct. The files to be
integrated must reside in an i386 or ia64 or m98 directory (ie, for an i386
share, if you typed "update/s C:\cdshare" the files must be in the
c:\cdshare\i386 directory).

Since I followed the KB to the letter, not sure why I got error message.

In short, I'm a long way from fixing my Search Companion. Please suggest
what I should do. Thanks.

Try Autostreamer.

[Automated slipstreaming] AutoStreamer 1.0.30:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4444.html

From Annoyances.org

<Q>

"Failed to copy some or all of the files necessary for integrated install"

This can happen for any number of reasons. You may've run out of disk space,
or one or more of the files may be corrupt. Try the process again; if you
see the error again, you may not be able to slipstream your SP2 CD.
