Search Companion

Mark Jones

I press START,SEARCH,It goes to dial up (tries to make a
internet connection). I click CANCEL (because I want to
search on my hard drive not the internet.) It says "A
file that is required to run search companion cannot be
found. You may need to run setup. Unfortunately I don't
want to go to the internet, and secondly I don't know
which file is missing or were it goes. I can't find
anything related to Search Companion in the setup.
Please tell me 1.How do I get it to stop trying to get on
the internet. 2.What file do I need and where does it go.
3. Another problem is somewhat related. My computer
tries to do automatic updates through the internet all
the time but I have it set to off. ie: Control Panel,
Administrative tools,Services,Automatic Updates, Check
the status and Disconnect. This is obviously not
working. A reply is greatly appreciated, thanks. -MJ

Hi Mark,

Search Assistant will try to connect to http://sa.windows.com This is done
to check for updates to its features, tips, wording and etc. Not allowing
access can cause its own set of problems, usually a "A file that is
required........." error message.

You can stop the internet access by changing the search behavior to Classic
Search.

Disable Search Assistant (Line 15)

Old Style Search Engine On/Off (Line 49)

Or...

Use TweakUI, Explorer section to set Classic Search:

Search Companion files may be damaged if you have Search Companion open when
you connect to certain Internet Service Providers.
