search companion gone? please help!

hello.

the other day I realized, when I tried searching for a file using the
standard Windows inbuilt search function - that I couldn't - it is all
greyed out!

that is, the window opens, but in the left frame where the different search
functions should have been, theres is nothing! it says "search companion" on
top, but below all is grey. what should I do now?

in addition, when I click 'help and support' in the Start menu, nothing
happens.

do I have to reinstall XP? or what?
