system restore doesnt even work

hello.

i'm wondering what to do. my computer is mostly functioning fine. but
the other day i tried searching for some files using the standard
inbuilt search function. but it didnt work - that is - the window came
up, and on top to the left it said "search companion", but below all is
grey. i tried system restore, but system restore won't work - it either
doesnt start, nothing happens, or it gives me a blank window. very strange.

help and support function doesnt function either - nothing happens when
i try to run it, or i get a blank window.

so, what to do? is it recommended to install XP over again? is it
possible without deleting installed programs?
